Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

View Photos from the event here

2012 Runners are off!

Despite having to switch the date and location for Integrated Medical Foundation’s 4th annual Blue Ribbon 5K Run due to the devastation caused by hurricane Sandy, over 500 people showed up in support of prostate cancer awareness on Sunday, December 9th at Syosset Woodbury Park. It was a fabulous morning! Participants came out for the cause and raised funds at this heartfelt community event.

Amazingly, the rain that was forecast held off for the entire morning and the temperature remained unseasonably mild. Men at the event took advantage of free prostate cancer screenings which were offered. A health fair took place  on site. Island Harvest and the Guardian Angels joined with us to distribute non-perishable food items collected for Sandy victims.

Physician Delivers Lifesaving Diagnosis in ED at Good Samaritan Hospital

West Islip, NY – A visit to the Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Department was a life-saving one for the Riley family. Margaret Riley’s husband, Rob, was unaware that he had a very serious urological infection when first admitted to the intensive care unit. Fortunately, the urologist who saw him that night was Marc Schumer, MD.

“There were difficult decisions to be made in the intensive care unit. Dr. Schumer actually listened to and addressed our concerns. He collaborated with other specialists throughout my husband’s admission, ensuring that his care was well coordinated,” said Mrs. Reilly.

Fortunately, Mr. Riley made a full recovery. “It seemed that Dr. Schumer was always there when we needed him,” said Mrs. Reilly. She was so thankful that she nominated Dr. Schumer for Good Samaritan’s Physician of the Quarter program. As the winner he was presented with a plaque, while Mrs. Riley, as the nominator, received a check for $100.

Good Samaritan Hospital encourages current and former patients to nominate a doctor who embodies certain qualities for its Physician of the Quarter program. The objective is to recognize compassionate physicians who have provided outstanding care to patients.

Throughout the year, the hospital recognizes physicians who have gone above and beyond to help their patients. Good Samaritan is accepting letters of nominations (no longer than 300 words) from patients wishing to nominate their doctors. Specific examples of how these physicians have exceeded their normal duties are requested. The patient selected and his/her doctor will have their story published in Good Samaritan’s community newsletter, Good News From Good Sam, and on the hospital’s website. Letters should be typed or printed legibly and contain the nominator’s name, address and phone number.

For more information about the Physician of the Quarter program, please call (631) 376-4444.

Nominations can be mailed to:

Senator Fuschillo (second right) is pictured with (l-r) Mary Rogers of Bostwick Laboratories, Lindenhurst Community Center Director Barbara Paladino, Dr. Marc Schumer, Integrated Medical Foundation Executive Director Rhonda Samuels, and Sasha Abraham of the Integrated Medical Foundation.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), in conjunction with the Integrated Medical Foundation and Bostwick Laboratories, recently sponsored a free prostate cancer screening program at the Lindenhurst Community Center.

Men who participated in the program received a free prostate cancer screening, regardless of whether or not they had insurance. The screenings were performed by Dr. Marc Schumer, MD.

Prostate Cancer is the most common form of cancer among men, after skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.

“I am so pleased that we are able to provide this important health service for men,” said Senator Fuschillo. “Early detection is vital in any cancer treatment and it is wonderful to see so many residents take advantage of this free screening program,” Senator Fuschillo said.

Men who were unable to take advantage of the program but would like more information about getting a free prostate cancer screening can call the Integrated Medical Foundation at 631-247-0100.

Prostate Cancer remains the second deadliest cancer for men, causing approximately 30,000 deaths each year. Yet if detected early, this disease is almost always curable. The Wear Blue for the Men You Love campaign, in its fourth year, is a call to action for all the important men in our lives: fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, and friends. Education and early detection are critical to winning the fight against prostate cancer.
